Preston North End have confirmed that Steve Thompson has joined the club as first team coach, with manager Simon Grayson saying as soon as he saw the 50-year-old had left Leeds United he sensed an opportunity.

Thompson was widely praised for his impact at Leeds last season, where he worked as number two to Neil Redfearn.

However, he was suspended from his duties towards the end of the campaign, something which coincided with a slump in form for the Whites.

Why Thompson was suspended by the Whites was never clarified and Grayson is just delighted to have added someone he views as a quality coach to Preston's ranks.

Grayson told his club's site: "Once I saw that he had left Leeds and what an impact he had there, I thought it was a great opportunity.

"Hopefully ‘Tommo’ can have a major impact on our season and over the next few years.

"It's no coincidence that he has worked at a good level; he's a good coach, he's always had a good rapport with the players that he's worked with and he fits into my ethos of what I want from my staff", the Preston boss added.

And Thompson himself is pleased to have linked up with Grayson.

"I've been to the training ground and met all the staff and I am looking forward to meeting all of the players and getting back into action", he explained.

Preston earned promotion from League One to the Championship last season, meaning in the forthcoming campaign they will be coming face to face with Thompson's former employers Leeds, first in December and then on the final day of the season in May.
