Crystal Palace have appointed ex-Liverpool sports doctor Zafar Iqbal as their new head of sports medicine.

Iqbal was appointed Liverpool's first team doctor in 2010, but is now heading for a new adventure and has expressed his excitement at joining his new club and talked up the club’s fanbase.

“I’m very excited by everything I’ve heard about the club and everyone knows that Palace has a great fanbase”, Iqbal said to Palace’s official website.

He has praised the club’s owners, pointing to the progressive measures they have undertaken at the club.

“The owners are looking to make major improvements across all areas of the club and that excites me the most."

Iqbal, who previously worked for Leyton Orient, Tottenham Hotspur and England's youth sides, has shed light on his role with his new club and explained his priorities at Crystal Palace.

“My role will be to look after the sports medicine care and medical provision for all playing staff, through all the ages.

“Initially, the priority will be with the first team and once new medical care standards have been established there, we will apply them to the Development squad, Academy and all the other age groups”, he added.

Iqbal held the position of chairman of the FA Medical Society for eight years. He became Spurs’ first team doctor in 2008 before joining Liverpool two years later.
