Former Liverpool right-back Rob Jones feels that the Reds’ latest acquisition, Nathaniel Clyne, will provide tactical flexibility to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Clyne enjoyed a successful campaign at Southampton under manager Ronald Koeman and played 35 Premier League games last term as the Saints finished in a commendable seventh spot in the league standings.

The England international earned plaudits for his performances and was linked with a move to reigning English champions Chelsea and Manchester United apart from Liverpool.

However, the Reds have acquired the 24-year-old as they strengthen their side to challenge for a top four finish in the league next season, following a sixth placed finish last term.

And Jones, who played for the Reds from 1991 until his departure in 1999, has lauded the signing, saying that the Anfield side needed reinforcements in the right-back department.

"We definitely needed to strengthen in that area", he was quoted as saying by Liverpool's official website.

"Last season Nathaniel looked pretty good and he hardly missed any games. He played 35 matches in the Premier League and didn't pick up any injuries.

"We need a bit of consistency in the full-back positions.”

After Liverpool’s initial struggles in the league last season, Rodgers used a back three and Jones feels that Clyne’s quality will give the Northern Irishman tactical flexibility.

"You'd imagine with the signing of Nathaniel that Brendan is looking to go with a back four but he'll have to see how things go in pre-season.

"Things can change for you as a manager and I'm sure than Nathaniel could cope with playing in a right wing-back role if needed, as well as a conventional right-back, which is great for the club."
