Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes results in pre-season are not indicative of a successful campaign.

Van Gaal’s Red Devils had a successful pre-season tour of America last summer when they won all their fixtures against the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Liverpool.

However, they started their league campaign with a home loss against Swansea City and eventually finished fourth in the Premier League last season.

And Van Gaal feels results in pre-season offer little pointer to how a club’s season will pan out, citing last summer’s experience as an example, and believes the first game of the season is the most important.

"It can also say nothing about that though because last year we won every game with big figures, good results and attractive football”, said the Dutch manager to his club’s official website.

“For me the most important match is the first match of the Premier League."

Manchester United will again head to the United States this summer for their pre-season tour. They will face off against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in four friendlies in the space of two weeks.

The Red Devils will take on Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in the first game of the Premier League, which is on the 8th of August.
