James Milner has chosen to take the number 7 shirt at Liverpool, the same shirt number which Luis Suarez most recently wore at Anfield.

Liverpool sold Suarez to Barcelona last summer after he powered a Premier League title tilt and finished as the league's top scorer.

The Reds slumped down to a finish of sixth without Suarez last season and Milner is one of the summer additions the club have made in an effort to once again get back into the top four.

And the former Manchester City midfielder is taking the number 7 shirt at Anfield, an iconic shirt worn by legends Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan.

"I know seven is a special number for this football club and hopefully I can be a special player for this club", he told Liverpool's official site.

"But as I said, with the success this club has had over its history, you could pick any single number from the squad list and you’ll be wearing a special shirt.

"Hopefully I can do the shirt proud and win plenty of matches for this football club."

Milner is arriving at Liverpool on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expired earlier this summer.

The England international is aiming to feature on a regular basis at Anfield and in his preferred position of central midfield.
