Former Rangers midfielder Alex MacDonald has stressed the importance of the Scottish Championship for the Ibrox club next season.

MacDonald, who was in attendance during yesterday’s Scottish League Cup draw which pitted Rangers at home in a first round tie against League One club Peterhead, feels the Gers should focus more on the league next season as they bid for promotion into the Premiership.

“At the end of the day it is the league we are worried about and the cup is more about the fitness levels at this stage”, he said to Rangers TV.

However, the 67-year-old hasn’t disregarded the cup ties altogether, and believes a good run in the cup will bring in more funds to the club which will help them sign players, and also help the players at the club gel together.

“If we won it would be great for the supporters and I hope we do well in it because it would bring more supporters in and more supporters means more money and more money means we can buy new players.

“Rangers need to focus on every 90 minutes, I don’t care who it is against, they just have to really concentrate.

“It is a team so the more they play together, whether it is a cup or a training session, is beneficial”, he added.

Rangers, who missed out on promotion into the Premiership last season after losing to Motherwell in the playoff final, will hope to go one step further in 2015/16.

The Gers last played in the Premiership in the 2011/12 season.
