Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels has admitted that he snubbed interest from Manchester United earlier in the summer in favour of staying on at the Ruhr giants.

The Germany international is believed to have been Louis van Gaal’s top target for his defence this summer and the Red Devils were ready to offer big money to Dortmund for the defender’s signature.

However, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said in May that he expected Hummels to stay at the club following discussions with the player.

And for the first time the defender has admitted that Manchester United were chasing his signature, something he found a "big honour".

However, he revealed that he snubbed interest from the Old Trafford outfit to continue at the Westfalenstadion.

The defender was quoted as saying by beIN Sport: "When the big clubs like Manchester United come for you, it's a big honour and a good thing.

“But I decided to stay this year."

However, Hummels refused to rule out a move in the future and remained coy over his long term career plans.

"I've been at Dortmund for a very long time, I haven't set a limit", he added.

"It's hard to say what the future brings, but I'm still here after seven years."

Hummels joined Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2008 and has won three German league titles amongst various other honours in his 259 appearances for the club.

He has also earned 36 caps for Germany and was one of the mainstays of the team that won the World Cup last summer.
