Zenit Saint Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay has become Real Madrid’s primary target in case Manchester United target Sergio Ramos leaves the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, according to Madrid-based daily AS.

Ramos’ future in the Spanish capital is a source of constant speculation as Manchester United remain interested in prising him away to Old Trafford, despite having a £28.6m bid rejected earlier this summer.

In the prevailing circumstances, Los Blancos are considering their options to fill the vacancy created by the possible departure of their long-serving defender.

And Zenit centre-back Garay is on top of their list as they look to strengthen their side for the summer.

The Argentina international had previously signed for the Santiago Bernabeu outfit in 2008 from Racing Santander, but he moved to Benfica in 2011.

Now a return for the centre-back is being considered as Real Madrid look to get back among the trophies, having ended their previous campaign without major silverware under then manager Carlo Ancelotti.

During his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, Garay made 31 first team appearances and netted one goal in the process.

He represented the Argentina national team at the recently concluded Copa America, where they finished runners-up to Chile.
