Former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has issued a statement following his departure as the club's academy manager.

The boyhood Leeds fan was removed from his role as head coach earlier this summer after a fallout with the club's owner Massimo Cellino and was replaced by Uwe Rosler.

However, as per the terms of his agreement with Cellino, Redfearn was entitled to return to his former role running the club's academy and signalled his willingess to do so.

But Redfearn has hit out at the Whites for an offer he claims was not genuine and accused the club of making his position at Elland Road untenable, something which left him with no alternative but to hand in his resignation.

The former midfielder has issued a statement relating to his departure and, while wishing the team and new head coach well for the upcoming campaign, has taken aim at the club and executive director Adam Pearson. He has also thanked the club's first team and fans for their backing when he was in the dugout for the Whites last season.

Neil Redfearn Statement

It is with great sadness that I am resigning from my employment at Leeds United with immediate effect.

I am desperately disappointed that Adam Pearson's 'offer' of a return to my old position as Academy manager was not genuine and the club have since made my position untenable by refusing to let me take up my post at Thorp Arch.

I would, however, like to place on record my thanks to everyone connected with the first team, including the fans, for making last season both productive and beneficial after a difficult start.

Very importantly I would like to pay a special tribute to the Academy where I proudly worked along with others for the best part of six years.

I would like to wish Uwe Rosler and his staff and players every success for next season and beyond so that Leeds can [get] back to the Premier League very soon.

Last, but not least, I wish to thank the fans for their unstinting support both during my time at the Academy and whilst in charge of the first team.

It has truly been an honour to represent and serve this great club.
