Barcelona have accelerated the purchase of Fluminense starlet Gerson this summer, according to Catalan daily Sport.

The Blaugrana paid 3.2m to Fluminense in May this year to have the preferential right on the youngster’s signing.

The 18-year-old agreed to a five-year deal with the Catalan outfit, and the club now need to negotiate with Fluminense to prise him away to the Camp Nou. The left-sided midfielder is expected to cost the club between €15m to €20m.

Following the conclusion of Barcelona’s presidential elections that saw the election of Josep Maria Bartomeu as the club president earlier this month, the Catalans have accelerated their bid for the youngster, for whom Juventus are also keen.

Barcelona are constantly in touch with Gerson’s father as they attempt to smoothen his acquisition.

The reigning European champions are currently under a FIFA-imposed transfer ban that prevents the club from registering their new purchases.

In the prevailing circumstances, Barcelona are working out the possibility of bringing the youngster to the Camp Nou in January so that he can immediately start plying his trade for the first team, or letting him stay with Fluminense until next summer.

Gerson, one of the brightest prospects in Brazilian football, has made 14 first team appearances with Flu and has three assists to his credit.
