Gonzalo Higuain has left Napoli's medical staff astonished by his improving physical condition after reporting for pre-season duty with the Serie A side.

The former Real Madrid striker has enjoyed an extended summer break due to his participation in Argentina's Copa America campaign in Chile this summer.

He has now linked up with Napoli ahead of the new campaign and the club's doctors are astonished by the condition they have found him in.

According to Radio Kiss Kiss, Higuain is six pounds lighter than the first time he was tested at Napoli after joining from Real Madrid in 2013.

He has also shed five per cent fat mass compared to the same time last year.

Higuain is now at Napoli's pre-season training base in Dimaro, but questions still linger about whether he will still be at the Serie A club when the summer transfer window slams shut.

The striker has been linked with a clutch of clubs, including Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.

But Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis remains unwilling to sell Higuain and has challenged interested clubs to meet a release clause in the player's contract, which has been estimated at €95m.
