Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has talked up new signing Sergio Romero’s attributes.

Romero penned a three-year deal with the Red Devils last night after signing on a free transfer from Italian club Sampdoria and Van Gaal has spoken highly of the Argentine goalkeeper’s qualities.

Van Gaal, who previously worked with Romero at AZ Alkmaar and won the Eredivisie title with him in the 2008/09 season, has hailed the ball-playing qualities of his new recruit as well as his physicality and stature.

Speaking to MUTV, the 63-year-old said: “He is a goalkeeper and he stops the balls, and that is also his position but he can also build up with his feet and that is, in our profile, very important.

“But also his stature is very good, he is tall.

“In the Netherlands he dominates the 60 metre area and I don’t know if he can do that in England, because it is a little bit different, but he is physically strong and he has confidence in himself, which is also very good I believe.”

Romero was the hero in Argentina’s World Cup semi-final win over Van Gaal’s Netherlands last year as he saved two penalties, and the Dutch manager took time to reflect on his performance in Sao Paolo.

“He did very well in the World Cup against us [Netherlands] because he stopped the decisive penalties [in the semi-final]”, Van Gaal added.

The 28-year-old played only ten Serie A games for Sampdoria last season, as he was used as a back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.
