Arsenal are interested in Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets in a bid to acquire him this summer, according to Catalan daily Sport.

Busquets is a product of the club's La Masia youth academy and has been an indispensable first team member of the Catalan outfit since he made his league debut in 2008 under then manager Pep Guardiola.

The defensive midfielder recently signed a contract extension until the summer of 2019.

However, Arsene Wenger’s side are interested in prising the Catalan away from the Camp Nou as they bid to strengthen their ranks ahead of the 2015/16 season.

Wenger gave Francis Coquelin opportunities in defensive midfield last season and the Frenchman was impressive in his displays.

He finished the season with 22 league appearances as the Gunners ended their campaign in third behind Chelsea and Manchester City and secured their second successive FA Cup trophy.

Arsenal are aware that Busquets offers more than just defensive solidity and his addition would give them a great boost to their title challenge next term.

The Gunners are keen on the pursuit of the Catalan, however, he remains integral to Barcelona's plans for the future and he is also minded to continue his career at the Camp Nou.
