Rangers manager Mark Warburton has insisted the Gers’ cup tie against Peterhead on Sunday is part of their five game pre-season programme to prepare for the new Championship season.

The Glasgow giants are up against Scottish League One outfit Peterhead at Ibrox in a first round Scottish League Cup tie this Sunday.

And manager Warburton is looking forward to the cup tie and has emphasised the importance of the game to gear his side up for their league campaign which starts on the 7th of August, saying the Peterhead tie is part of the Gers’ pre-season programme before the new season kicks-in.

“We have more to come this week and more work to be done and we have said all along it is about the five game pre-season programme to then focus on August 7 against St Mirren”, said Warburton to his club’s official website.

“We’re looking forward to Peterhead, we’ll train hard, prepare well and analyse the game and the performance as best we can from the weekend and look ahead.”

The Light Blues are on the back of Saturday’s 6-2 win over Hibernian in their first competitive game of the season in the Petrofac Training Cup, and the 52-year-old is insistent on keeping the performance levels consistent, and is happy with the fitness levels of his squad.

“We will focus on lifting the level of performance because we have to perform week in and week out – we can’t be good one week and not the week after, it has to be consistent.

“I think fitness levels have been good, bearing in mind we have lost a week compared to a normal pre-season and they displayed those levels on Tuesday and Saturday”, he added.

Rangers, who start their Championship campaign against St Mirren, will hope to push for promotion under the new management of Warburton next season after falling short in 2014/15.
