Southampton have contacted Italian giants Napoli to lodge an enquiry for French centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Ronald Koeman's men are working overtime to add another central defender to their squad before the transfer window slams shut at the start of next month and have been linked with Celtic's Virgil van Dijk.

But the Saints are not putting all their eggs in the Dutchman's basket and according to Sky Italia they have made contact with Napoli over Koulibaly.

But the road to signing the 24-year-old is anything but smooth as Napoli are at present not keen on allowing Koulibaly to leave.

Nevertheless, Southampton are continuing to talk with Napoli over Koulibaly and are hoping a potential deal can be put in place.
