Manchester City have officially confirmed the signing of defender Nicolas Otamendi from La Liga giants Valencia on a five-year contract.

Otamendi, who was consistently linked with Manchester City's local rivals Manchester United this summer, has put pen to paper on a contract running until 2020 at the Etihad Stadium.

The Argentina international centre-back has been handed the number 30 shirt by the Citizens and further bolsters manager Manuel Pellegrini's defensive options for the season ahead.

Otamendi is thrilled to have linked up with Manchester City and promised to give his all and fight for the sky blue shirt as the Citizens aim to regain the Premier League title.

"I am here to give my best, to fight game by game and push City to the highest peaks for as long as possible, and I wish we will be able to win several cups and titles", he told his new club's official site.

"That’s the most important.

"To be here inside a club that looks so wonderful from the outside is a dream."

Otamendi's performances for Valencia last season earned him a spot in La Liga's Team of the Season and the 27-year-old will be keen to enjoy similar success in the English top flight with Pellegrini's men.
