Atletico Madrid are closing in on the acquisition of River Plate midfielder Matias Kranevitter as the Argentine has landed in Madrid to finalise his transfer.

Kranevitter has been eyed by Los Colchoneros all summer and they now appear close to getting their target.

The midfielder, who played an instrumental role in helping River Plate secure the Copa Libertadores earlier this year and with it earned them a place at the Club World Cup, has expressed his delight at the opportunity to sign for the Spanish giants.

“I’ve no idea where I will be signing the contract”, he was quoted as saying by Madrid-based daily AS.

“But what I do know is that I’ve very happy to be here in Madrid and to have this opportunity. I’m very grateful to be here.”

The 22-year-old has said that he always wanted to play for Los Rojiblancos and is looking forward to playing alongside some of the players he has lined up with previously.

“Atletico is a big club and it’s where I wanted to play.

“There are a few players who I know, who I’ve played with as team-mates.

"It’s very exciting for me.

“I’ve spoke very briefly with El Cholo.

“I know some of the players in the squad but I haven’t had the chance to speak with them or the boss yet. I’m sure I will over the next few days.”

If his transfer goes through, Kranevitter will join the likes of Jackson Martinez, Stefan Savic, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, Luciano Vietto and Filipe Luis amongst others, who have all signed for the Vicente Calderon outfit this summer.
