Rio Ferdinand feels Manchester United’s handling of the David de Gea situation will set the tone for the future.

De Gea’s future at Old Trafford has been a topic of much trepidation all summer as Real Madrid want him and he has refused to sign a new contract to extend his stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

While Los Blancos are still hopeful of getting a deal done at this late stage of the window, Manchester United have remained adamant that the deal will only happen on their terms.

Louis van Gaal has frozen the Spaniard out of the first team picture and has maintained that the situation will be assessed after the transfer window slams shut next Tuesday.

Ferdinand feels his former club’s handling of the situation will set a precedent for the future and indicated that Manchester United are right to make De Gea respect his contract at Old Trafford.

“I think it sets a tone for the future”, the former defender said on BT Sport.

“I think it has told players that if you think that you can get out of the club easily, then you can’t.

“If we want you to stay and you are one of our better players, then you have to play under the right conditions.

“This sets a tone.”

De Gea is not expected to be included in the Manchester United squad for their trip to Swansea this Sunday, but should make a comeback to the team if he stays at the club beyond next Tuesday.
