Real Madrid have confirmed a season-long loan spell for defender Fabio Coentrao with Monaco.

Coentrao arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2011 under then manager Jose Mourinho, but he struggled to feature regularly in Spanish giants’ first team.

He was forced to play second fiddle to Marcelo and was also not helped by a slew of injuries through the course of his time at the Bernabeu.

The Portugal international was linked with a move to Inter Milan, however, he has opted for Monaco despite their recent exit from the Champions League at the playoff stage.

A statement released by the Real Madrid website confirmed the departure of Coentrao for the Stade Louis II.
