There is a penalty clause for Real Madrid in case they fail to sign Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea this summer, according to Madrid-based daily AS.

Real Madrid have been keen all summer to land the Spain international, but Manchester United have not yielded in their resolve to keep the custodian at Old Trafford.

The fee demanded by the Red Devils – believed to be around €40m – has not been agreeable to Los Blancos and it appears increasingly likely as the transfer window nears its closure that the Spanish giants will have their man next year- when his existing contract runs out.

But in the event of them not signing the 24-year-old, the Santiago Bernabeu club will be forced to pay a sum of €10m to the goalkeeper which is part of a penalty clause in an agreement with him, it has been claimed.

Real Madrid are currently using Keylor Navas as their number 1 goalkeeper, with summer signing Kiko Casilla as his deputy.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal has omitted De Gea from his first team and has been deploying Sergio Romero in goal on account of the Spaniard’s loss of focus due to speculation surrounding his future at the club.

It remains to be seen if Real Madrid launch a last minute bid to sign De Gea.
