Tottenham Hotspur have lodged a bid for Zenit Saint-Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel, but it has been rejected by the Russian club, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side made a bid worth €26m for the Belgium international, but the offer has been knocked back by the Russian giants, who do not want to sell the former Benfica player.

This summer, Witsel has attracted the attentions of several European outfits, which has included the likes of Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan, but he has remained in Russia thus far.

The 26-year-old has been open to moving on, but despite the Lilywhites’ offer, Zenit are standing firm.

Witsel has been at the Russian Premier League club since 2012 when he landed from Benfica and has gone on to win the league title as well as the Russian Super Cup during his time at the club.
