Former Bayern Munich and Celtic striker Alan McInally feels that David de Gea is now in a difficult position at Manchester United.

Manchester United and Real Madrid started talking again about a proposed transfer for De Gea yesterday, but with the transfer window in Spain closing last night, the Spanish giants were always up against it to complete the move.

However, it seemed De Gea was on his way to Real Madrid after they struck a deal with Manchester United worth €40m, with Keylor Navas moving to Old Trafford as part of the agreement.

But the deal collapsed at the dying minutes of the window as Real Madrid failed to file the relevant paperwork with the Spanish FA in time to tie up the move for De Gea.

De Gea, who has a contract until next summer with the Red Devils, has been angling for a move all summer but with the deal faltering at the last hurdle, former Celtic striker McInally feels that the Spaniard is now in an uncomfortable position at Old Trafford.

“What a joke this is”, McInally said on Sky Sports News Deadline Day programme.

“This has put David de Gea in the most unbelievably difficult position.”

Unless Real Madrid find an unlikely way to ratify the deal, De Gea is expected to stay at Manchester United for at least one more season.
