Southampton have officially confirmed the signing of defender Virgil van Dijk from Celtic.

The Dutchman has joined the Saints on a five-year contract after the Premier League side agreed a fee with the Scottish champions for the former FC Groningen man.

Van Dijk had been tipped to leave Celtic after their failure to reach the Champions League group stage and now he has made the move to the Premier League.

Celtic snapped Van Dijk up from Dutch side FC Groningen and manager Ronny Deila had been adamant that the Bhoys did not financially need to sell the Dutchman.

But he has left Celtic Park and is now a Southampton player.
