Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown feels Arsene Wenger should have signed a striker this summer to make a statement in the transfer market.

Arsenal fans were left disappointed after Wenger failed to bring in any new players on deadline day and Petr Cech remained their only significant addition to a squad that finished third in the league last season.

Many felt Arsenal needed to bring in a few more quality additions, especially a top class striker, to compete for the league title this term – but Wenger decided to put his faith in his current group of players.

Former Arsenal defender Keown also feels that the Gunners needed a forward as he believes Wenger’s men have looked short in their attack so far this season.

The former Gunner feels a new striker could have provided optimism to the Arsenal fans and believes the Frenchman has missed a major opportunity to make a statement in the transfer market.

“I believe they needed a striker and only time will tell us whether he was right or wrong”, the former Arsenal defender told the BBC.

“But the early signs of the season are that it is an area of weakness.

“It would have excited the fans if they had signed a striker as it would have been a statement.

“I think this is a missed opportunity.”

Arsenal are the only team in Europe’s top five leagues who have not signed a first team outfield player this summer.
