Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has advised David de Gea to continue to perform at his best after his move to the Bernabeu collapsed.

The Spanish international was on the verge of joining Real Madrid on Monday before it all fell apart in a matter of hours.

The ten-time European champions failed to file the necessary paperwork in time with the Spanish FA to get the deal over the line and his switch from Manchester United crumbled at the last hurdle.

De Gea has been angling for a move away from Old Trafford all summer but now he has to return to Manchester United at the end of the international week and there are still no assurances from Louis van Gaal that he will restore the 24-year-old as his first choice goalkeeper this season.

Ramos, who would have been De Gea’s skipper at the Bernabeu, has asked his international team-mate to get on with his life despite the disappointment of his failed transfer to Real Madrid.

The defender advised the goalkeeper to not allow the saga to affect his game and maintain his high standards on the field.

"I've not spoken with De Gea and I don't know what his feelings on this situation are, but life goes on”, Ramos was quoted as saying by Marca.

“There are more important things in life than this. What he needs to do now is carry on working hard to maintain the standards that he has set for himself in recent years.

“He has had a difficult summer because a decision has been made on his future, and that of his family.

“These are things that we all go through at one time or another, but you just have to get on with it and, wherever you are playing, give your very best.”

Manchester United next face Liverpool at Old Trafford after the international break and it remains to be seen whether Louis van Gaal decides to bring De Gea back to the first team fold ahead of that big game.
