Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has slammed Manchester United for overpaying for the signature of Anthony Martial on deadline day.

Manchester United splashed out an initial fee of £36.7m to prise the France Under-21 international away from Monaco on deadline day.

The final fee could rise up to £58.7m if Martial manages to fulfil his potential and achieves certain goals at Old Trafford over the next few seasons.

Louis van Gaal has come in for heavy criticism for spending such a large sum on a 19-year-old forward, who is yet to make an international appearance for the French senior team.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also questioned the transfer and his former full-back, Dixon, has slammed Manchester United for overpaying for a rookie such as Martial.
