La Liga president Javier Tebas has termed Real Madrid’s version of their botched attempt to sign David de Gea from Manchester United, more accurate.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper’s much anticipated move to the Bernabeu collapsed on Monday when Real Madrid failed to file the proper paperwork in time to tie up the deal.

The Spanish giants later released a statement, blaming Manchester United for their failure to sign De Gea, but the Red Devils struck back with a counter argument, suggesting that they did everything in their power to take the deal over the line.

In this war of words between the two behemoths of club football, La Liga's president has sided with Real Madrid and has backed their argument against Manchester United.

"I would have liked him to have played in La Liga because he's a world-class Spanish keeper, but it wasn't to be given the circumstances”, Tebas told Movistar+.

“Real Madrid's version of events more accurately describes what happened, as far as I know."

Tebas admits that he understood why the deal did not go through and also sympathises with De Gea, but stressed he had very little options in front of him once the transfer deadline had passed.

La Liga president also insisted that he was never under any pressure to ratify the agreement.

"Real Madrid called after midnight, but they knew the deadline had passed.

“They had a problem with the TMS [Transfer Matching System] system. I understood their position and that of the player, but nothing could be done.

“I never felt under pressure."
