Atletico Madrid new boy Stefan Savic, who was linked with a move to Manchester United, has said that he is playing for one of the giants of European football.

Savic has landed at the Vicente Calderon from Serie A outfit Fiorentina this summer and before he put pen to an Atletico Madrid contract, Manchester United were reported to be after his signature.

However, the defender eventually signed for Diego Simeone’s side and will be looking to break into the first team where Uruguayan duo Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez are expected to be the first choice centre-back pairing for the Argentine.

Savic isn’t shy about fighting for a spot in the first team, saying there is always competition for places in the big teams.

“At all the big clubs there is a lot of competition”, he was quoted as saying by Madrid-based daily AS.
