Memphis Depay has come in for stinging criticism after the Netherlands slumped to a 3-0 defeat away in Turkey at the weekend which has placed their hopes of reaching Euro 2016 next summer in the balance.

Danny Blind's men were second best throughout in Konya and Turkey duly put them away to leapfrog the Oranje into third spot in their qualifying group.

The Netherlands' performance is now being dissected and country legend Willem van Hanegem has taken aim at Depay, who he feels contributed nothing.

Van Hanegem, who won 52 caps for the Netherlands, also took aim at Depay's physique, which he feels adds nothing to his game.

"With the Oranje there are a number of players who just seem busy with themselves", he wrote in the Algeemen Dagblad.

"Take Memphis for example. He's like Goldfinger, with his pretty boots.

"But what did he do for the Dutch team? He just laid on the ground, being despondent.

"It seems like these guys are entering a contest for bodybuilders.

"Previously you had players who were muscular, now they are inflated and inflated – that's a big difference."

The Netherlands now have two Euro 2016 qualifiers remaining and must hope that Turkey drop points in their final games in order to sneak into third spot.

And even then the Oranje would still have to go through a playoff round to reach the finals in France.
