Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has expressed his elation after David de Gea penned a new four-year deal with the Red Devils, saying the goalkeeper is one of the best in the world at his craft.

De Gea was the subject of a prolonged transfer saga in the recently concluded summer transfer window as Real Madrid remained in his keen pursuit right until the end. However, their last minute bid to sign the custodian didn’t materialise as they failed to submit the relevant documents in time.

Manchester United have now seen the goalkeeper commit his future to the Old Trafford outfit as he has signed a new four-year deal with an option of a further year, thereby eliminating the possibility of him leaving for free as his old contract was ending next summer.

Van Gaal, who has not fielded the Spain international so far this season because of his belief that De Gea was distracted by the speculation surrounding his future, has welcomed the latest development.

The Dutchman has termed the 24-year-old a world class goalkeeper, adding that he has many years at the top level ahead of him.
