Brazilian outfit Fluminense have terminated the contract of former Barcelona star Ronaldinho at his request, after just three months at the club.

Ronaldinho joined the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A club in July after being released by Queretaro of the Liga MX and went on to feature in five games for the Flu. However, his time at the club didn’t go according to plan and he failed to score or assist in his five appearances for the side.

Fluminense have terminated the contract of the 2002 World Cup winner, thereby making him a free agent. A statement released on the club website confirmed the news.

"Fluminense hereby announces the breaking of their contract with Ronaldinho Gaucho in an amicable form and in mutual agreement between both parties.

"Since first contact with the directors, the athlete and his representatives treated the club with professionalism and respect.

"Fluminense and Ronaldinho will proceed with ties maintained and plans to work on other projects in the future."

The official statement further noted the positive impact that the signing of the Brazil international had on the club, as his arrival gave a significant boost to the club’s finances.

"It's important to mention that the signing corresponded with our expectations in relation to marketing returns, increased ticket sales, sales of shirts and number of socios."

From 2003 until 2008, Ronaldinho plied his trade for Barcelona and went on to become one of the pivotal figures at the club. He won two league titles and a Champions League during his time at the Camp Nou.
