Poland legend Zbigniew Boniek has come to the defence of his compatriot and Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after he was criticised for his mistakes in a Champions League encounter against BATE Borisov earlier this week.

The Italian outfit, who held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico in their opening game of the 2015/16 Champions League campaign, went 3-0 down by half time against the Belarusians on Tuesday. And ultimately lost 3-2.

The Arsenal custodian, who has been on loan in the Italian capital outfit has faced blame for the first two goals – as he came out too early for the first that allowed the hosts to score, and the second for which he was wrongly positioned that invited a long shot from BATE.

Boniek has defended his compatriot and feels that the custodian was perhaps at fault for the first goal, but not so much for the second.

"I am not his lawyer”, he was quoted as saying by La Roma 24.

“He has wrong on the first goal, the second less, but some mistakes can happen and this doesn’t make me change my opinion of him.”

The 59-year-old further added that Szczesny, who is on loan from Arsenal at Roma, just had a bad night at the office, but is actually a great goalkeeper.

“And not just because he speaks Polish like me, I really think he's a great goalkeeper who had a bad night.”
