Rangers manager Mark Warburton says competition for places is driving right-back James Tavernier forward at Ibrox.

The summer signing has been in superb form for the Gers this season and has regularly chipped in with goals, not least from set-pieces, where he is gaining a reputation for being a lethal striker of the ball.

Tavernier was on target again today, putting Rangers 2-1 up against Falkirk with less than ten minutes of their Scottish Championship fixture remaining; the game eventually ended 3-1 to the Gers.

Warburton is full of praise for Tavernier, but believes part of the reason he is performing so well is because he knows if he does not hit the standards required he will lose his place in the side.

The boss told Rangers TV: "He’s an attacking full-back. We had Moses Odubajo last year at our old club and it’s that athletic, forward thinking full-back. You can press them back and much of the defending is done higher up the pitch.

"So Tav has been first class. He knows his responsibility here, he knows it’s a big position, and he knows there are people breathing down his neck for his shirt.

"That’s what we want to have but I’m delighted for Tav", Warburton added.

Rangers' victory over Falkirk means they have won all nine of their opening nine Scottish Championship games and sit top of the table with 27 points to their name.

They are next in action post the international break when Queen of the South are set to provide the opposition at Ibrox.
