James McCarthy is quietly confident that Everton have the ability to turn their recent record against Liverpool around.

Everton are winless in the Merseyside derby since September 2010 and despite Liverpool’s recent struggles, the Toffees have failed to come away with all three points from the fixture for the last five years.

However, Liverpool have been struggling in the league this season and Everton are ahead of their Merseyside rivals ahead of their first derby of the new campaign.

McCarthy is aware that a win in the derby is long overdue for Everton and their fans, but ahead of the fixtures he insisted that the Toffees are not concerned about their recent record against Liverpool.

“We know we need a win [in the derby]”, McCarthy told the BBC.

“We are not looking too much into the stats as we have made a decent start; we are taking a game at a time and next up are Liverpool.

“We are looking forward to the derby.”

The former Wigan man revealed that some of the local boys in the squad have been speaking to some of their foreign recruits to make them realise the importance of the fixture.

McCarthy insisted that the players are aware of the pressure that comes with a derby, but is confident that in front of their home fans, they will be able to come away with all three points against the Reds.

“It will be a massive test; few of the boys, especially the Scouse lads, have been speaking to players such Gerry [Gerard Deulofeu].

“A few young boys have come into the squad and they know how important the game is."

“We will have a great atmosphere too as there is nothing better than a full-house at Goodison.”
