Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes that Arsenal are a club with a lot of potential, but are still behind Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the European pecking order.

The Gunners were more than impressive at home tonight, running riot against their arch-rivals Manchester United, winning the match 3-0 and thus replacing Louis van Gaal's team in second place in the league table.

While Souness believes that the result and the Gunners' performance on the pitch were more than impressive, he regrets the fact that Arsene Wenger's team have not been able to live up to expectations so far in terms of winning the league title.

"This is a sleeping giant. It's a big club by most people's standards, but its still behind Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. It should be up there", Souness told Sky Sports.

The 62-year-old also took time to speak about the prospects of Arsenal competing for the league title, insisting that the Londoners' potential exit from the Champions League could play a crucial role in that.

According to Souness, once the Gunners are out of the Champions League and playing in the Europa League, maybe Wenger will sit down with the board of directors and decide on playing his squad players in the Europa League and key players in the Premier League.

"If you are Arsene Wenger managing this club and you don't get through in the Champions League you sit down with the directors and say 'I'm going to play the squad players in the Europa League'.

"So maybe that would give them a clear run [at the title]."
