Chelsea have issued a statement offering their full backing to under-pressure manager Jose Mourinho.

The Blues have endured a terrible start to the season under the Portuguese, just months after they lifted the Premier League title, and have collected only eight points from eight games.

Mourinho insisted that sacking him following Saturday's 3-1 loss at home to Southampton would be a bad move on Chelsea's part and the club have today issued a statement offering him their full backing.

Chelsea are sure that Mourinho and the players can turn the ship around at Stamford Bridge, however also noted that results of late have not been of the required standard.

The Blues said in a statement: "The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support.

"As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team's performances must improve.

"However, we believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it."

Chelsea, who are 16th in the league table, are next in action after the international break at home against Aston Villa, while they then travel to the Ukraine to play Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League.
