Swansea City defender Neil Taylor has expressed his shock at seeing his former boss Brendan Rodgers being sacked as Liverpool boss after three seasons in charge, explaining he thought the Reds had a long term plan

Taylor worked under the 42-year-old manager as the Northern Irishman guided the Swans to Premier League promotion at the end of his first season in charge.

He left for Liverpool the following year though and had been at the helm at Anfield since, leading the side to a second place finish during the 2013/14 season.

The remainder of his reign was filled with trouble however, with the young manager having spent a third of a billion on transfers without getting a positive outcome.

Taylor, who works under Garry Monk, another young boss, insists that the modern manager's job is in no way easy and he does not in any way envy those who are coming through.

"This is modern football and I don't envy young British managers coming through", Taylor was quoted as saying by ITV.

"I am shocked because it seemed like they had a long-term plan at that football club.

"Brendan is a good manager and whether they changed their train of thought that they needed to bring someone in to have immediate success I don't know.

"They gave him money to spend this summer and maybe they felt they haven't started well enough this year.

"But the key for young managers is they've got to be given time to build their own team."

The Reds are expected to announce a replacement for Rodgers soon with former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp leading the race to take over.
