Emre Can has backed Jurgen Klopp as a quality manager, but insists that the players at Liverpool must take the blame for Brendan Rodgers being sacked as he felt the Northern Irishman always did good work.

Klopp has been tipped to take over at Liverpool after Rodgers' sacking from his position yesterday, following a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby against Everton.

Rodgers took Can to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014 and had been regularly handing the German game time this season; he played against Everton as part of the Reds' defence.

Can is a firm fan of Rodgers and when asked about the possibility of Klopp taking over at Liverpool could not resist paying tribute to the Northern Irishman.

"Jurgen Klopp is surely a great coach", Can told Die Welt.

"I think he has proven at Dortmund that he can fit into every team in the world.

"But this is the situation: We had a low with Liverpool which cost us a couple of games. Even though coach Brendan Rodgers has mainly been targeted, at the end of the day it is us players who were responsible for the situation at Liverpool.

"Rodgers did good work, as always."

Liverpool are aiming to have their new manager in place by the time they visit White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.

Can will hope to impress the new boss as he looks to cement his spot in the side, while there is also still a debate raging over whether the German is a defender or a midfielder.
