Brendan Rodgers has issued a statement following his departure as Liverpool manager and insists that whoever takes over at Anfield will inherit a side in transition.

The Northern Irishman was shown the door by Liverpool yesterday, having his contract terminated by the Reds following his side's 1-1 draw away at Everton.

Rodgers is delighted to have had the opportunity to manage Liverpool and has thanked the club for handing him the job in 2012. However, he is adamant that his successor will have to cope with a team in transition.

"I am, of course, incredibly disappointed to be leaving Liverpool Football Club. It has been both an honour and a privilege to manage one of the game’s great clubs for the last three years", he wrote on a statement issued by the League Managers' Association.

"I have worked every day to represent the club to the best of my ability, to develop both individual players and a team that the club’s magnificent fans can be proud of", Rodgers continued.

"There have been some very memorable moments during my time at Liverpool and I would like to thank all of the players for their hard work and commitment.

"The current squad is one in transition, but they have some real talent and are showing a strong sense of togetherness.

"I expect to see them continue to grow and develop over the coming weeks and I wish them and my successor well for the rest of the season."

Rodgers is reported to be receiving a payoff of around £7m after being sacked by Liverpool and has been tipped to quickly bounce back into management in the Premier League.

Already the Northern Irishman has been linked with the vacant job at Sunderland, a spot created by Dick Advocaat's resignation at the weekend.
