Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez has expressed his disappointment at two lost points from last night’s Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid, saying that his team suffered due to a lack of precision in the opposition half.

Los Blancos travelled to the Vicente Calderon with a chance to go atop the table with a win, but in the end came away with a 1-1 draw in a match that saw Keylor Navas save a penalty from Antoine Griezmann.

Benitez, who took charge of the Madrid giants for the 2015/16 season after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, feels that his team dropped two points due to a lack of precision in the final third.

"We have taken one point and dropped two”, he was quoted as saying by the Real Madrid website.

“We dominated the first half and did what we had to do, but after the break they put pressure on and played with added intensity. We had chances on the counter-attack that we did not put away and we lacked precision."

However, he conceded that Diego Simeone’s side deserve the praise for the work they did and were dominant towards the end of the match.

"We have to give Atletico the praise they deserve, they pressured and looked to attack. We have dropped two points due to the way the game went.

“We had the lead and we committed two errors, the penalty and the goal.

“Just looking at the last 15 minutes, you would admit that Atletico had the momentum, but if you consider the whole game you see that we had control for large periods.”

Real Madrid remain unbeaten in the league at the conclusion of the first seven games, having won four and drawn the other three so far.
