Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has revealed that the hysteria surrounding his transfer fee had very little effect on him.

The Red Devils made the 19-year-old Frenchman the most expensive teenager in the world when they shelled out €50m on transfer deadline day to prise him away from Monaco.

The final transfer fee could rise up to €80m over the next few years, if Martial continues to progress and achieves specified targets during his time at Old Trafford.

While his fee and Manchester United’s decision to splash out such a figure came in for heavy criticism from all quarters, Martial revealed that he was not too bothered with all the attention it was getting.

He added that he was just focusing on arriving at Manchester United and starting playing football for one of the biggest names in European football.

“It did not bother me too much”, Martial told RMC.

“It was more my family, with all that was written in the newspapers and what was said. I was just in a hurry to go to Manchester and play football.

“Many people spoke, but I stayed focused. I worked hard to be ready.

“I have not read any of the newspapers. Since I was little, I never looked at what was said about me.”

The initial hysteria around his transfer fee has died down as Martial has hit the ground running for Manchester United, with four goals from seven appearances.

His overall performances have also received widespread praise and the Frenchman is now an important member of Louis van Gaal’s starting eleven.
