Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge is surprised by the timing of Brendan Rodgers’ departure, but admits the Reds' performances have not been up to scratch for a long time.

Liverpool sacked Rodgers from their managerial post hours after their 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday and Jurgen Klopp is currently the favourite to take up the role by the end of the week.

Despite another summer of heavy spending, Liverpool’s performances have not been good enough this season and the Northern Irishman paid the price for failing to show progress on the pitch.

Aldridge admits that he was shocked by the timing, but believes Rodgers had the tools required to at least achieve a top four spot, which he feels for a club of Liverpool’s stature should not be the limit of their ambitions.

“I am surprised as anyone else, surprised with the timing”. Aldridge told LFC TV.

“It was a shock, but we move one. We have come to be happy with just reaching top four, but really we should be aiming higher.

“He had a lot to do, but with the squad he had, top four should have been attainable, without doubt.”

The former Reds striker believes a manager should be held accountable for his side’s form and feels Liverpool’s performances over the last season or so have not been up to scratch.

“A manager lives and dies by the results and from our point of view the last nine months have not been good enough.”
