Chelsea striker Diego Costa admits that he didn’t return to pre-season training in the summer in the best shape possible.

The Blues have made a disastrous start to their Premier League title defence and have collected just eight points from as many games in the league.

While they only lost three games on their way to the league title last season, Jose Mourinho’s men have already lost four this time around and only have two wins under their belt.

Costa himself has been out of sorts this term and has been far from the striker that terrorised Premier League defenders last season. His discipline on the pitch also hasn’t helped Chelsea’s cause, as he has already missed three games due to a suspension.

The Spain striker shares the blame for Chelsea’s poor form this season and admits that he was not physically at his peak during the first few weeks of the season.

He added that he returned to pre-season training overweight and blames himself for his lack of match fitness.

The striker was quoted as saying by AS: “We know we are not there where we wanted to be at the beginning of the season.

“I’ll be very honest; maybe a couple of weeks ago I was not at the top of my game, at least physically.

“I got injured towards the end of last season and then went for my vacation. When I returned, I was a little overweight.

“I can be selfish and blame the coach but I won’t. I am hundred per cent responsible.”

Mourinho will be hoping to have Costa at his best when Chelsea host Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge next Saturday.
