Newcastle United have suffered an injury blow with the news that goalkeeper Tim Krul has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The custodian ruptured a cruciate knee ligament during the Netherlands' 2-1 win over Kazakhstan on Saturday while on Euro 2016 qualifying duty.

Krul has returned to Newcastle for treatment, but will not play again this season due to the serious nature of the injury.

The Dutchman has now vowed to work hard to recover and return to action for the Magpies as quickly as possible.

Krul took to Twitter to write: "I'm devastated the scan has confirmed my biggest fear that I have torn my knee cruciate playing for Holland in the game vs Kazakhstan last night. My recovery and hard work starts now to fully recover."

Newcastle fielded Krul for all eight of their Premier League games this season, but are now likely to promote Rob Elliot to first team duty as Karl Darlow is out with a foot injury.

Due to Krul's injury, Freddie Woodman has been recalled from a loan stint with Crawley Town and may be included on the bench to provide cover for Elliot.
