Manchester United starlet Joe Rothwell has been called back from his loan deal at Barnsley after he suffered a bout of tonsillitis.

The 20-year-old midfielder is a product of Manchester United’s academy and has been regular for the club’s Under-18 and Under-21 teams over the last few years.

He had a loan spell at Blackpool towards the end of last season and made his first foray into senior football with three appearances at Bloomfield Road.

To further aid his development, the club decided to loan him out, until January, to League One outfit Barnsley in the summer and Rothwell made seven appearances for the club before bad luck struck.

He has been suffering from a bout of tonsillitis and the club have decided to cut short his loan at Oakwell to nurse the midfielder back to full-fitness.

A statement on the club’s official Twitter account read: “Young #mufc midfielder Joe Rothwell has been recalled from his loan spell at Barnsley after suffering from tonsillitis.”

Rothwell has made 29 appearances for the club’s Under-21 side and even represented Manchester United in the UEFA Youth League.

Manchester United will be looking to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible and then decide whether to loan him out or keep him in their ranks for the time being.
