Sheffield Wednesday may not be able to keep hold of striker Lucas Joao for too much longer following his international debut for Portugal, midfielder Jose Semedo believes.

Joao only joined the Owls in the summer, but has already made his presence felt on the pitch, scoring four goals in 18 appearances and seeing his performances meet with praise.

The 22-year-old hit the back of the net against Arsenal last month as Sheffield Wednesday ran riot in a 3-0 League Cup win which shocked the Gunners.

Joao made his senior Portugal debut in the international break, being brought off the bench in a friendly against Russia.

Fellow Portuguese Semedo, who plays alongside Joao at Hillsborough, has told Sheffield Wednesday to brace for losing the striker.

He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I don't believe he will be that long for us because I think the giants will be wanting him soon.

"Obviously I want the best for my club and I hope he can take us to the big stage.

"I would love him to be with us, but I don't think he will be for long", he added.

Semedo also hailed Joao's achievement in forcing his way into the senior Portugal squad despite playing second tier football, while he purred over the striker's talents.

"He's remarkable. I don't remember any other player playing second division and getting picked by Portugal.

"It's a great achievement and it is massive for the club too because Portugal is one of the best countries in the world.

"I love the way he plays. He combines power, pace, skill and he's a big guy."
