Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard feels Jurgen Klopp must eye winning the Europa League to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Wins over Chelsea and Manchester City in recent weeks have allowed the Reds to again dream about finishing in the top four this season, but they are still six points off fourth placed Arsenal.

Liverpool are competing with a clutch of sides in the top half of the table to finish in the Champions League spots and Gerrard feels Klopp must take the Europa League seriously as a means to make it to Europe’s elite competition.

He believes winning the Europa League is a wonderful incentive for a club such as Liverpool and believes that the German has shown through his team selections that he wants to win the trophy this season.

Gerrard said on BT Sport: “It is a big incentive that if you win this competition, you get Champions League football.

“Top four is not guaranteed for any of the sides that are up there at the moment, so Liverpool are taking the competition seriously; you can tell by the teams that the manager is putting out.

“I am sure he has got one eye on winning it. For me, it is a great trophy and I have experienced winning it.”

Liverpool are second behind FC Sion in Group B of the competition and will be looking for all three points tomorrow against Bordeaux to solidify their position in the group with respect to qualifying for the last 32 of the competition.
