Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has apologised to the club's fans for his performance against Ajax this evening, dubbing it "simply shocking".

Griffiths was named in the starting eleven by Bhoys boss Ronny Deila, but was unable to stop Celtic slipping to a 2-1 defeat at Paradise, something which means they are now out of the Europa League.

Celtic took the lead after just three minutes through a superb run and shot from Calum McGregor, but then saw Ajax draw level in the 22nd minute.

Then, as each side looked for another goal knowing only a win would do them both, Ajax broke and scored again in the 88th minute, giving Celtic no time to recover.

Griffiths clocked up all 90 minutes, but was unhappy with the shift he put in for the Scottish champions.

He took to Twitter to write: "I can't be more apologetic than I am right now.

"My performance was simply shocking and ultimately it's cost us dearly."

Griffiths did miss chances on the night, but he was not the only Celtic player to be found wanting when it mattered most.

The Bhoys have one Europa League group game remaining, but it is a dead rubber for the Scottish side, away in Turkey against Fenerbahce.

The Turks however, who sit second in the group and two points clear of third placed Ajax, will be keen to win.
