Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has heaped praise on "champion" Jamie Vardy and hopes to see the striker break Ruud van Nistelrooy's record against Manchester United this weekend.

Vardy has equalled the former Manchester United forward's record of scoring in ten consecutive Premier League matches and will have the opportunity to surpass him when the Foxes meet Van Nistelrooy's former side this Saturday.

Ranieri, whose team are currently placed at the top of the Premier League pile by virtue of Vardy's fascinating form, is keen to brush past the Red Devils on Saturday, as they try to build a cushion between themselves and the other teams at the top of the league table.

The onus though will continue to be on Vardy, the manager believes, as he is a player who puts the team ahead of his personal achievements and will do the same this weekend as well.

“Jamie Vardy is a champion. For me he’s a champion because he thinks more about the team than himself", Ranieri said at a pre-match press conference.

“I hope for Vardy and for the fans that he breaks the record.”

Speaking about the prolific form that his team are in, the veteran manager added that his side are building for the future.

“I think we're building a very big construction. I believe in the next year Leicester will grow. We are very happy.

“Some people say Leicester can remain at the top, others say it’s just a moment. I'm glad for the fans, but we’re just focused.”
