Christian Benteke admits he would have liked to have taken Liverpool's penalty in their 2-1 win over Bordeaux in the Europa League at Anfield this evening.

Liverpool slipped behind in the 33rd minute, with Bordeaux being handed a free-kick in the penalty area after Simon Mignolet held onto the ball for too long.

And Henri Saivet made no mistake when the ball was rolled to him by Jaroslav Plasil, stroking the ball into the top corner of the net.

But Bordeaux's lead did not last after Benteke was brought down in the box just four minutes later, allowing James Milner to step up and convert from the spot.

Liverpool then took the lead in first half injury time, Benteke controlling the ball well from a Nathaniel Clyne cross and smashing the ball into the back of the net.

Both sides could not summon any further goals and it ended 2-1 to Liverpool, booking the Reds a spot in the last 32.

Benteke, reflecting on the penalty, admits he would have liked to have taken the spot-kick, but was happy enough for Milner to take it.

He told BT Sport: "Of course, yes [I wanted to take it], but Milly was the first so I let him shoot."

The Belgian was also pleased with his performance and added: "I think I tried to do my job when the coach needs me.

"I tried to work hard for the team and today was a good game for ourselves.

"I think that's why I came here, to fight every game and every opportunity the manager is going to give me."

And ahead of Liverpool's final group game against Sion, when it was put to Mignolet that the Reds could rest players, he shot back: "We want to win the group."
